After back to back overtime loses on their home turf, the UD
Lady Crusaders were looking forward to getting on the plus side of
the win column on Senior Day...and the Dallas squad played that
way. Unfortunately the Howard Payne University acted as the
spoilers and scored two late goals to propel themselves to the 2-0
win Tuesday afternoon.
Deadlocked at 0-0 heading into the break, things looked promising
for UD as they held the Yellow Jackets to six shots while taking
nine of their own in the first half. The second half started off
great for UD also, as they limited the Howard Payne scoring
opportunities for most of the frame. With the clock winding down
and entering the 78th minute, Howard Payne made everything change.
The Yellow Jackets got on the board at the 78:46 mark for the 1-0
lead, and scored another goal just over two minutes later for the
2-0 win. Signs of promise for UD were the three shots each by a
trio of freshmen. Forward Melissa Carpenter (Sugar Land, TX/Stephen
F. Austin H.S.), midfielder Marie Meagher (Grand Forks, ND/Red
River H.S.), and forward Summer Northern (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas
County H.S.) all had a hat trick of shots, while freshman
forward/midfielder Briana Gomez also registered a shot. Seniors
Lindsay Arend and Kate Palla each registered two shots as they
passed on the torch to the underclassmen. The forward/midfielders
and Napa, CA natives (Trinity Grammar & Prep), along with
senior goalkeeper Jennifer Boryca (Piqua, OH/Piqua H.S.) have all
played huge roles for the soccer squad during their time at UD.
Boryca also finished the game with five saves.
With the heart breaking Senior Day loss, UD falls to 5-11 on the
year with four games remaining. Next up for UD is a trip to
Memphis, TN for a game on Friday, October 30th against Rhodes
College. The start time is 3:30pm.
