Claire Sexton's late header helps Women's Soccer remain unscathed; Lady Crusaders open season with consecutive shutouts

HOBBS, N.M. - The University of Dallas women's soccer team (2-0) prevailed over University of the Southwest (N.M.) by a score of 1-0 Sunday afternoon on the road, thanks in part to the late heroics of a familiar name.

Sophomore forward Claire Sexton (Salem, Va./Salem H.S.) broke a scoreless tie in the 88th minute, heading one past Lady Mustang goalkeeper Abagail Medina off a well-placed cornerkick cross from freshman midfielder Michele Carpenter (Sugar Land, Texas/Austin H.S.). The dramatic goal was Sexton's third tallly of the young season.

With strong winds playing a factor, it was vital the Lady Crusaders remain patient in a physical game where Southwest earned three yellow cards.

Freshman defender Kayla Nguyen (Olathe, Kan./St. James Academy) provided stability on Dallas' defensive line, while sophomore goalkeeper Brigid Hasson (Fairfax, Va./Trinity at Meadowview) succesfully combated just one shot on goal.

Dallas outshot Southwest 13-2, forcing Medina into making six saves. Sophomore defender Emily Rogers (San Antonio, Texas/MacArthur H.S.) led the squad with three shots on goal.

Next opponent:

Up next for the Lady Crusaders will be a 6:00 p.m. road quarrel with LeTourneau University on Thursday in Longview, Texas.
