IRVING, Texas – The University of Dallas is proud to celebrate longtime coach, educator, and mentor Harry Hall, whose remarkable four-decade career with UD Athletics has left a lasting impact on generations of Crusaders. This fall, Hall is being honored with the prestigious St. Sebastian Award, recognizing his unwavering faith, service, and commitment to the ideals of the University of Dallas.
When Hall first arrived on campus as the head cross-country coach in the fall of 1983, he never imagined that UD would become his professional and personal home for more than forty years—spanning four athletic directors and countless student-athletes. Over the years, his role extended far beyond coaching: Hall worked with intramurals, hosted fundraisers and meets, formed a running club, and eventually served as head track coach, assistant coach, and volunteer coach for both cross-country and track.
Hall's legacy includes leading 15 athletes to USCAA All-American honors and guiding four runners to NAIA Cross-Country Nationals, while also helping numerous others set school records. His voice and vision have also defined the annual UD Cross-Country Invitational, where he continues to serve as announcer and historian, preserving the athletic department's storied past.
Beyond the track, Hall taught public speaking for 23 years, shaping students in both athletics and academics with the same principles of discipline and faith. Reflecting on his time at UD, he credits the university's enduring mission for his lasting connection.
"While UD has made significant campus-wide and academic upgrades," Hall shared, "the school has maintained its vision—ensuring that students not only learn but continue to grow in their faith."
Hall also expressed deep gratitude to UDallas Athletic Hall of Famer and former Athletic Director Dick Strockbine, his supervisor for over 20 years and a trusted mentor. "Coach Strockbine became more than a manager," Hall said. "He was someone I could trust—a confidant who stood in my corner when that was sometimes a lonely place."
Receiving the St. Sebastian Award, named for the saint who remained steadfast in faith amid great adversity, holds special meaning for Hall. To him, it symbolizes giving back to a community that shaped his life's work.
"Seeing my name among the other recipients is a true honor," Hall said. "I hope the spirit of St. Sebastian continues to inspire others at UD to carry forward the university's unique qualities and contribute to its ongoing success."
For more than forty years, Harry Hall has embodied the perseverance, faith, and dedication that define the University of Dallas. His legacy continues to run strong—both on the course and in the hearts of those he's inspired.
