In 1979 Jerome Vanier led the University of Dallas men's tennis team to unprecedented heights. In the National Association Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) tournament Vanier was runner-up for the singles championship and with his doubles partner Bastian Vaan Drager was a quarter finalist. His success resulted in the University of Dallas finishing as runner-up for the NAIA Championship. The NAIA named him a tennis All American for that performance. After leaving the University of Dallas Vanier played on the men's professional tour at the United States Open Championship at Flushing Meadow and in a number of European professional events.
