Smitty Duke is the only Olympian to have attended the University of Dallas. He was a member of the United States Volleyball team in the 1968 Summer Games in Mexico City. After the games Sports Illustrated magazine selected him to their "All-World" team. While at the University of Dallas he was an All-American baseball selection in 1964 when he led the NAIA in runs batted in with 40 and was second in home runs with 9. He also played on the winningest baseball team in UD history in 1963. In the late 60's and early 70's he returned to UD as athletics director, baseball coach, and volleyball coach. He holds baseball career marks for home runs and runs batted in as well as the season and single game marks for home runs. His career numbers are .357 batting average, 102 runs, 130 hits, 21 doubles, 4 triples, 31 home runs, 124 runs batted in, 17-4 record as a pitcher, 186 strikeouts in 174.2 innings and 3.76 earned run average.
