DALLAS, Texas - The University of Dallas women's basketball team fell to Dallas Christian College 71-63 in overtime on Tuesday. The Crusaders (1-12, 1-4 SCAC) led the game the whole way up until the last 10 seconds of regulation. A late three by Trish Daily tied the game at 58 with just 10 seconds left in regulation. Both teams missed crucial free throws down the stretch to take the game to overtime. Dallas Christian (6-7) outscored UD 13-5 in the overtime period to take the season-sweep.
Dallas grabbed an 8-0 lead to start the game. DCC then stormed back with a 7-0 run of their own. UD expanded its lead to 13-7 after Faith Starnes (Bryan, Texas) buried a three-pointer. The home Crusaders got close after a three-pointer by Avery Roberts along with a Daily layup. Monica Stephens (Grinnell, Kan.) pushed the road Crusaders lead to 18-14 after one quarter with a layup of her own.
A 5-0 run to start the second period pushed the road Crusaders lead to 23-14. DCC stayed close making key shots, but Vanessa Diaz (San Antonio, Texas) made two free throws with three and a half minutes remaining to push the lead to 10. Starnes ended the second quarter with a trey to secure a 38-25 UD lead at halftime.
Starnes hit two more three-pointers to start the second half. Taylor Jobe (Queen Creek, Ariz.) added a layup to notch the largest lead of the game for UD at the 6:44 mark. A 6-0 run for DCC erased the big deficit down to nine (46-37). Diaz grabbed two free throws to put UD up 48-37 at the end of three. Dallas had a 55-41 lead with four minutes remaining in regulation. A 5-0 DCC run capped off with a Danielle Curtis jumper made things interesting (55-46).
Jules Oliveti (Southlake, Texas) made both of her free throws from the charity stripe at the 1:43 mark. Trish Daily then finished off a 7-0 run for DCC with another three-pointer. Starnes added one free throw, (58-54) but with 10 seconds left in the game Karly Baker made two free throws to help DCC get within three points. A couple missed free throws for UD gave DCC a chance to tie the game. Trish Daily made her third trey on the day with two seconds remaining to tie the game at 58. Missed free throws on either end sent the game to overtime. Avery Roberts converted six points, while Karly Baker made five in overtime to help DCC take the non-conference win.
Starnes led UD with a career-high in points (20) and rebounds (17) for her first career double-double Starnes also notched a season-high five made three-pointers as she shot 5-10 from behind the arc. Diaz posted 11 points and 14 rebounds as she has now made double-digit points in the past 10 games. Oliveti notched eight points and matched a season-high 10 rebounds. Stephens added eight points and seven rebounds. UD shot 7-21 (33.3 percent) from three-point range on the day.
Daily led all scorers with 36 points. Brittany Melcher and Baker added 10 points in the DCC win. The home Crusaders forced 34 UD turnovers in the game, scoring 24 points off of turnovers, along with 20 fastbreak points.
UD matched a school record with 65 rebounds. The other single-game record was against Stephens on February 16, 2002.
Dallas will be back home to host Southwestern University on Saturday (1/12). First tip is set for 4:00 p.m.
