LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Eleven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference programs were recognized by the league as the Spring 2019 Sportsmanship Teams in their respective sports.
The SCAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) instituted the award prior to the 2016-17 academic year in an effort to honor the team that best portrays good sportsmanship and fair play from the players and coaches during the season. The spring awards are presented in baseball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, softball, men's and women's tennis and men's and women's track and field.
Men’s lacrosse and women’s track and field were two programs from the University of Dallas that garnered recognition for their good sportsmanship displayed throughout their respective campaigns.
Keith Loftis guided the UD men’s lacrosse program in his first season, having been hired in January. Dallas hosted the 2019 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Championship in April, as the conference sponsored the sport for the first time since 2014. Tyler Smith (Snoqualmie, Wash.) was selected to the SCAC All-Sportsmanship Men’s Lacrosse Team last month.
Track & Field head coach Matt Barber led the women’s team in his fifth season for his alma mater (’13). Lauren Zammit (Kingswood, Texas) received the distinction of SCAC All-Sportsmanship Women’s Track & Field for the Crusaders representative.
The awards were voted on by each member institution's SAAC, with each individual group ranking the top three teams in each sport. The first place selections were awarded five points, second place earned three points and third place earned one point. Points were then totaled to select the conference's overall winner.
