Baseball loses Game 1 of doubleheader to Texas Lutheran University, takes Game 2 versus Bulldogs

SEGUIN, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (4-2) split the first two games on Saturday of the three game series versus Texas Lutheran Univeristy. Texas Lutheran won Game 1, 6-3, while Dallas handled the Bulldogs in Game 2 of the doubleheader, 5-2. The two teams will battle on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1:00 p.m. in a rubber match.

Game 1: Dallas 3, Texas Lutheran University 6 Boxscore

Senior Crusader right-handed pitcher Philip Carkhuff (Marietta, Ga./The Lovett School) was on the hook for the loss after allowing 10 hits and five earned runs in 3.2 innings pitched in the start for Dallas against Texas Lutheran.

Scoring didn't get underway in Game 1 until the bottom of the 3rd inning. It was then when Texas Lutheran's M. Peterson knocked in two runs on a triple.

Texas Lutheran also struck in the 4th inning, getting to Carkhuff for three runs before he was relieved by sophomore pitcher Chris Schierhorn (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.). Schierhorn went 2.1 innings in the 7 inning game, allowing a single and run in the 5th inning.

Dallas finally got on the board when junior Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.), the left-fielder, touched home plate in the 6th inning, as sophomore third baseman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) grounded out to third base.

After holding the Bulldogs to zero runs in the 6th inning, the score entering the 7th and final inning as 6-1 in favor of Texas Lutheran.

The Crusaders got to reliever Sean Madden for two runs off an RBI fielder's choice from catcher Delano Ponce (Albuquerque, N.M./Albuquerque Academy), scoring designated hitter Nico Caluda (New Orleans, La./Jesuit H.S.) before Arnold singled, bringing in junior first baseman Michael Morrison (Dallas, Texas/Lake Hill Prep).

Game 2: Dallas 5, Texas Lutheran University 2 Boxscore

After a Game 1 defeat to Texas Lutheran, Dallas gets it done in Game 2 behind the superb pitching of two junior right-handed pitchers, Michael Byers (Manassas, Va./Seton Home School) and Michael Schweiss (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.).

In six innings of work, Byers struck out five and walked three, while allowing one run on five hits. Meanwhile, Schweiss went three innings, notching the win in striking out three, walking three, and allowing one run on two hits in the nine-inning game.

Texas Lutheran got on the scoreboard first, when first baseman M. Peterson singled, allowing right fielder Kyle Eaves to score.

The resilient Dallas squad quickly responded, tacking on two run in the 7th inning. Designated hitter Joel Hansen (Shadow Hills, Calif./Verdiago Hills H.S.) scored first for the Crusaders, when center fielder Brian Shelburne (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth H.S.) knocked him in off a single. Hansen reached on a hit by pitch. The second of Dallas' runs crossed the plate when Devin Arnold (McKinney, Texas/McKinney H.S.) stole third and then scored on an error by catcher Ryan Hill.

The Bulldogs tied the game in the bottom of the 7th inning, when D. Yancelson scored after he stole third base before touching home plate off an error from Dallas shortstop David Rettinger (San Antonio, Texas/Central Catholic H.S.).

In the 8th inning, Dallas took a commanding 4-2 lead, as junior first baseman Michael Morrison (Dallas, Texas/Lake Hill Prep) scored on a wild pitch, before Hansen gave up a SAC for the RBI, allowing right-fielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) to score.

The Crusaders added an insurance run in the top-half of the 9th inning, when Shelburne touched home plate thanks to an error by the shortstop.
