Baseball proves ready for road test at Sul Ross State University; Saturday's doubleheader sees Dallas win Game 1, 5-4, and Game 2, 9-6

ALPINE, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team (5-0) remains unbeaten after defeating Sul Ross State University (SRSU) in both games of Saturday's road doubleheader. The Crusaders dismissed the Lobos in game one, 5-4, before taking a 9-6 decision in game two.

Game 1: Dallas 5, SRSU 4 (F/7) Box score

Saturday's doubleheader began with a 5-4 Dallas (4-0) victory in game one.

6-foot junior right fielder Adam Farris (Flower Mound, Texas/Liberty Christian H.S.) put the Crusaders on the scoreboard in the first inning, with a three-run homer to right field. The Lobos responded with a three-spot in the bottom of the third-inning to level the score.

On the bump for the Crusaders was 5-foot-11 junior right-handed pitcher Michael Byers (Front Royal, Va./Seton Home School). He went six and one-thirds, allowing eight hits and four earned runs, while striking-out four hitters en route to his second win.

6-foot sophomore left fielder Alex Thornton (Fort Worth, Texas/Arlington Heights H.S.) scored the game-winning run in the top of the seventh, when 5-foot-11 junior third baseman Trevor Allred (Anchorage, Alaska/South Anchorage H.S.) laid down a well-executed sacrifice bunt.

Registering his first save of the season, 6-foot-2 senior right-handed pitcher Michael Schweiss (Parker, Colo./Chaparral H.S.) was summoned to record the final two outs of the game. It was mission accomplished for Schweiss despite allowing two hits to go with a strike out.

Game 2: Dallas 9, SRSU 6 (F/7) Box score

Dallas (5-0) capped the day with a 9-6 game-two triumph.

6-foot freshman right-hander Jacob Bruns (Holland, Mich./Holland Christian H.S.) was the winning pitcher on record, pitching the second, third and fourth-inning in relief of 5-foot-9 senior righty Stephen Hansen (Shadow Hills, Calif./Verdiago Hills H.S.).

In three innings of work, Bruns (1-0) surrendered just four hits, while striking-out two Lobo batters.

Allred, Farris, 5-foot-9 freshman shortstop Nolan Kipp (Folsom, Calif./Christian Brothers H.S.) and 5-foot-10 junior designated hitter Nico Caluda (New Orleans, La./Jesuit H.S.) each tabulated two hits for Dallas, while Thornton had three base knocks.

6-foot-4 freshman right-handed reliever Martin Cronin (The Woodlands, Texas/The Woodlands Christian Academy) picked up his first save of the season, allowing five hits and one earned-run over the game's final three innings. He struck-out one and walked another.
