Men's Basketball Falls Short vs Mary Baldwin, Despite Strong Second Half

November 18, 2023

ARLINGTON, Va. - The University of Dallas men's basketball team lost 75-69 to Mary Baldwin in game one of the Pablo Coto Tip-Off Tournament, hosted by Marymount University, on Saturday.

The Crusaders struggled out of the gate, going 1-of-9 from the field in the first six and a half minutes allowing the Fighting Squirrels to jump out to a 12-3 lead.  Dallas never quite got things in order as they went on to shoot just 28% in the first half, trailing by as many as 17 points in what was otherwise a pretty even contest.

Mary Baldwin went into halftime with a comfortable 13-point advantage.

Dallas gave a strong response in the second half and wasted no time cutting into the deficit.  The Crusaders made five unanswered field goals inside the first three minutes to pull back within three points, and from there it was anybody's game.

The Crusaders erased the deficit completely, tying the game up at 43-43 having outscored the Fighting Squirrels 21-8 in seven and a half minutes.  Jack Boyle and Kelton Coleman were instrumental in Dallas' resurgence, as the pair combined for 25 points in the second half.

Despite their best efforts, Mary Baldwin reclaimed the lead with 11 and a half minutes remaining and never let it slip, Dallas never coming closer than two points off the lead.

The Crusaders more than doubled their scoring output and nearly doubled their efficiency in the second half, outscoring Mary Baldwin 47-40 on 52.9% shooting from the field and 40% shooting from beyond the arc.

Boyle led all players with 22 points, going 8-of-12 from the field with 16 rebounds, securing his second double-double of the season.  Coleman provided 11 points in 15 minutes off the bench, and Jamal Leftwich (pictured) went 4-of-6 from the field and 3-of-5 from three to score 11 points.
