IRVING, Texas - The University of Dallas baseball team lost their non-conference matchup against McMurry University on Tuesday, falling to 11-12 overall on the year.
Dallas 5, McMurry 13
WP: Seth Parriette (1-0)
LP: Marcelo Carrillo II (2-1)
With a good chunk of the Dallas lineup serving one game suspensions after the benches cleared in Sunday's game against Centenary, the Crusaders were forced to use the most unorthodox lineup you are likely to see, with six pitchers filling the starting lineup.
Things got off to a bumpy start as the Warhawks plated three runs on just one hit, taking advantage of four free passes and an error by the Crusaders. But Dallas answered back in a big way in the bottom of the first. After Graeme Williams, who is no stranger to playing the field, but has spent the majority of his time at UD as a pitcher, got on base to lead off the inning, Seth Medley stepped up for his third official at-bat in his three seasons as a Crusader.
On a 1-2 count, the Crusaders' third baseman for the day launched a moonshot over the left field wall, recording his first collegiate RBI and homer with one swing of the bat to make it a 3-2 ballgame.
McMurry didn't take long to reply, however, adding three runs in the second and one in the third to go up 7-2. The Crusaders pulled one back in the third, but stranded four runners across the second and third innings. The Warhawks added four more runs to their tally, taking an 11-3 lead after five and a half innings.
The Crusaders put themselves in a position to strike a number of times. They loaded the bases with no one out in the bottom of the sixth and managed to plate a couple of runs on a walk and a fielder's choice, but couldn't come up with a timely hit to really cut into the deficit.
After the Warhawks added a pair of insurance runs in the eighth, Dallas loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the inning. That all-important base knock eluded them yet again, however, as they stranded all three runners. They couldn't get anything going in the ninth, giving McMurry the win.
Medley was 2-for-4 on the day with two RBI, and is now hitting .500 for his UD career. Donnie Dycus was excellent in his debut at shortstop, playing a pristine defensive game and going 3-for-4 at the plate. Jacob Reece made his first start and recorded the first base hit of his career, going 1-for-3.
Colby Fuller and Collin Johnson both did double duty on the day. Fuller started as the DH, making his first ever appearance at the plate and recording his first hit in his five seasons at UD, threw three innings of relief, then played an inning at first base. Johnson played eight innings at first base, then threw one inning of scoreless relief.
