Crusaders Run-Rule Randall in Series Opener

March 1, 2024

IRVING, Texas. - The University of Dallas baseball team won their series opener against Randall University on Friday, improving to 8-1 on the season.

Dallas 11, Randall 1 (7 Innings)

WP: Adrian Montenegro (4-0)

LP: Jett Sparks (0-5)

The Crusaders took control from the first inning, scoring three runs on three hits and never looking back.  Adrian Montenegro was mowing down the opposition, perfect through his first eight batters and struck out five in four innings.

Dallas took advantage of a shoddy inning by the Saints, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fourth on just one hit thanks to three free passes, a wild pitch, and an error.  They made it an 8-0 game with some tricky baserunning in the bottom of the fifth, employing a get-picked play with runners on first and third for the second time in the game, plating runs both times.

The Saints finally got to Montenegro the third time through the lineup, scoring their first and only run of the game on three hits in the sixth, though Montenegro left them wanting more as Randall left the bases loaded.

After a scoreless inning of relief by Cayden Hohman, the Crusaders needed just one run in the seventh to run-rule the Saints.  It didn't take long with Paxton Huff leading off.  After working a five-pitch walk, the speedster swiped his second bag of the day, then Reed Morales drove him in with an RBI single to walk it off.

Montenegro finished the game with seven strikeouts and one earned run in six innings of work.

Huff was 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, and three runs scored.  Simon Turner led the team with three RBI, going 2-for-4 at the plate with a stolen base.
