WEEKEND OUTLOOK
The University of Dallas volleyball team (1-0) embarks on its first road trip of the fall season. Four matches await the Lady Crusaders in St. Louis Missouri, as they participate in the ASICS Invite hosted at Washington University (MO). The first two contests out of the quartet are on Friday, September versus Rhodes College at 6 p.m. and Washington University at 8 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, UD will conclude the invite with UW-Oshkosh and Knox College at 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m., respectively.
LOOK AT THE NUMBERS
Dallas defeated Dallas Christian College on Tuesday night at the Maher Center, going 3-0 for the sweep. Junior Mairin Guilfoyle (Roanoke, Va.) logged a team-high nine kills, while senior Jaime Birzer (Ottawa, Kan.) and junior Lexi Noriega (Salinas, Calif.) added seven apiece.
Noriega added to her Crusader debut with a team-high 10 digs, and junior Jessie Koster (Sherwood, Ore.) chipped in eight on the defensive side. Freshman Kaley Turner (Puyallup, Wash.) bumped a team-high 17 assists and fellow teammate Elizabeth Smith (Broken Arrow, Okla.) also cracked double figures in that category with 12.
WHO THE FOES ARE
Rhodes College took a 1-0 start to the season on Tuesday, pushing past Belhaven University (25-18, 25-13, and 25-19) for the sweep. Lulu Schulz posted a team-high seven kills and Maraia Tremarelli totaled 17 assists. The Lynx went 7-21 last year.
No. 9-ranked Washington University prevailed 3-0 at Greenville College on Wednesday. The sets were: 25-20, 25-17, and 25-17. Alex Sheredy was credited with 12 kills and Anna Bryniarski matched that total for the team-most in digs. In 2014, this weekend's host university was 35-6 and claimed third in the University Athletic Association (UAA) tournament. The Bears would qualify for the NCAA Regional, and after winning the first round would fall in the Regional Championship.
The Titans from UW-Oshkosh have already played twice this regular season with a doubleheader on Tuesday, September 1. UW-Oshkosh narrowly nipped Edgewood College 3-2, before sweeping University of Dubuque. Katelyn Malcheski is the team-leader in kills with 31, while Nerissa Vogt added 22. Mandy Trautmann is ahead on the team garnering 42 of the squad's 141 digs. Last year the Titans went 31-8 with a third place finish in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC).
Knox College takes to the court for the first time on Sept. 4 in this invite with two matches. First the Prairie Fire will face North Central College and Blackburn College before taking on Washington University and UD on Saturday. Knox College went 5-24 in 2014.
HISTORY
Dallas has gone 2-8 all-time versus Rhodes College and last met in 2012 at a tournament hosted by Austin College. It was a 3-1 (25-19, 19-25, 18-25, and 21-25) final result favoring the Lynx.
Washington University met the Crusaders one time dating back to October 9, 2010, and UD fell 3-1 (14-35, 12-25, 25-21, and 17-25). Saturday's opponents – UW-Kosh and Knox – have never played the Dallas volleyball program.
